Carbon and nitrogen dual doped TiO2 (C-N-T) powders were obtained by annealing TiCN powders in an air atmosphere. The obtained C-N-T powders change from the anatase dominant phase to a pure rutile structure when the annealing temperature increases from 500 to 950℃. The average grain size ranges from about 10 μm to 1 μm. The dopants exist as a cation state instead as an anion state. The dopants cause a significant red shift of the absorption edge. A broad photoluminescence signal is detected at room temperature in the C-N-T powders, which may be related to the impurity induced states in the band gap of TiO2.
