Effects of Dietary Supplementation with L-carnitine on the Semen Quality of Boars during the Hot Season

公豬飼糧添加L-carnitine對改善熱季精液品質之效果評估

摘要


本研究目的係評估在熱季時於公豬飼糧中添加L-carnitine,對改善公豬精液品質之效果。試驗共使用平均12月齡畜試黑豬一號公豬(含75%杜洛克與25%桃園豬血統)27頭,依預備試驗期之精液性狀,逢機分置於三種飼糧處理組,每組9頭。對照組公豬餵飼含粗蛋白質15%、代謝能3,250 kcal/kg的玉米-大豆粕基礎飼糧,試驗組則分別在對照組飼糧中添加500 ppm或1000 ppm L-carnitine,公豬以假母台訓練採精,於6~10月份每隔7日採精一次,檢查之精液性狀包括精液量、精液pH值、精子濃度、總精子數、畸形精子率及精子活力等項目。結果顯示,飼糧中添加L-carnitine並未改善公豬精液品質。但公豬飼糧添加500 ppm L-carnitine,於七月至十月份之高溫季節,有提升精液量、增加精子濃度及總精子數,降低精液pH值及畸形精子率之趨勢,並於某些採精日期,可達到顯著性(P < 0.05)的差異。

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of L-carnitine as a dietary supplement on the semen quality of boars during the hot season. A total of 27 TLRI Black Pig No.1 (TBP) boars were selected and randomly divided into three groups. Boars in each group were fed either a basal diet (CP 15% , ME 3,250 kcal/kg, control, Group A) or diets supplemented with 500 ppm (Group B) or 1000 ppm (Group C) L-carnitine. Semen samples were collected once a week for a 3-month period starting on June 1, 2010. The semen characteristics, including semen volume (gel-free), pH, sperm concentration, total sperm per ejaculation, sperm motility and percentage of abnormal sperm, were measured. The results showed that there was no overall effect of dietary L-carnitine supplementation on semen production in boars. Nevertheless, boars fed the diet supplemented with L-carnitine showed increased sperm concentration and total sperm number and a reduced percentage of abnormal sperm. In conclusion, using L-carnitine as a dietary supplement improved the semen quality of boars in the hot season.
