Through analyzing the results from quantitative surveys to scholarly publishing related professions in Europe and North America (with emphases on authors, users of electronic journals, scholarly journal editors and referees, and librarians), the article tries to find the academics' attitudes toward electronic journals.
The existing statistic data in the literature helped conclude that: 1. scholarly journal editors and referees acknowledge the contribution of print journals in scholarly communication and recommend parallel publications, 2. authors are reluctant to submitting their work for publication in electronic journals because most institutions do not consider publication in electronic form a scholarly work, 3. users are neither willing to do without print journals nor the electronic ones, and 4. unfortunately, some academic libraries are forced to cancel print journals due to shrinking budget and dramatically increasing periodical price.
The article advises libraries to act rather right than quick in terms of supplanting print journals with electronic counterparts.
