Mycology can be strengthened world-wide only through regional actions. In order to act effectively, each of us must face the challenges which are obstacles to the realization of this goal. Six challenges are identified. Recognition: To raise awareness of fungi in matters of human concern. Identity: To establish mycology as a discipline distinct from both botany and microbiology. Organization: To develop cohesive organizational structures encompassing different mycological specialisms so that the subject can be represented by a common voice. Ignorance: To consider how best to confront the study of a group in which only 5—6% of the species on Earth have yet been named. Resources: To plan the effective use of existing, collection and human resources. Action: To decide what action to take and develop prioritized plans. It is important to face these challenges in earnest now. The ratification and implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity provides a window of opportunity in which countries are developing national action plans, and United Nations and other funding agencies are reorientating their programmes. If we miss the current opportunities, they may not recur in the foreseeable future.
