An Investigation of Satisfaction with Level II Fieldwork among Occupational Therapy Students

摘要

Fieldwork component is an essential part of occupational therapy education. It seems reasonable to use the information obtained from students' assessment of the fieldwork to improve its quality. In this study a construction and use of a scale to measure students' satisfaction with Level II fieldwork is presented. The proposed scale includes three parts: the degree of satisfaction with hospital departments, the degree of satisfaction with supervisors and the degree of satisfaction with the improvement of professional knowledge. An overall satisfaction with Level II fieldwork scale was constructed by weighting and adding up these three subscales. Seventy-eight students were surveyed by using the scale. The differences in the overall level of satisfaction were examined in terms of students' characteristics. Results showed that the majority (69.2%) of the students were satisfied with Level II fieldwork as compared to only 3.9% of the students who were dissatisfied. The students practicing in the field of physical disabilities and psychiatric conditions were more satisfied with Level II fieldwork than the students in the field of pediatrics (p<.05). Results also indicated that there was a positive correlation between satisfaction with Level II fieldwork and the students' interest in occupational therapy (p<.05). These findings were discussed and recommendations were made in order to improve the quality of fieldwork education.
