APPLICATION OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING (BIM) TO AUTOMATED FALL-PROTECTION SAFETY INSPECTION OF BUILDING CONSTRUCTION OPENINGS

Traditional construction safety planning practice relies on experienced safety staffs to plan fall protection activities based on his/her realization of the construction site conditions with 2D drawings and the associated safety regulations. There are essential drawbacks existing in such a manual safety planning practice. The present research adopts Building Information Modeling (BIM), Application Programming Interface (API) techniques, and the safety inspection knowledge from the safety regulations and domain experts to develop a BIM-based Automated Fall-protection Safety Inspection System (BIM-AFSIS). The proposed BIM-AFSIS aims at improving the drawbacks of the traditional manual safety planning methods. A case study was conducted on the application of the proposed BIM-AFSIS to identify the fall risks of a 12-story residential building construction project. The testing results showed that the proposed BIM-AFSIS has identified all fall risks correctly, it also demonstrates the potential to automate identification of fall risks of a building construction project.
