This paper tries to look into the concept of art utopia of the Neo-Marxism philosopher, Herbert Marcuse. The analysis will be divided into three parts in order to probe into Marcuse's art utopia theory: they are Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, the western contemporary concept of technology, and the worship of imagination advocated by German romanticism. It will demonstrate how Marcuse develops his unique concept of art utopia under the influence of these three kinds of thinking, as welt as how he actualizes the concept of art utopia in doing art criticism. Last but not least, it will give a brief discussion on Marcuse's criticism on the avant-garde theater.
