Enlightenment of Mauriac's Novels: Christian Spirit and Humanistic Concerns

Combining his pure and noble Catholic faith, Mauriac revealed the excessive materialistic desires as well as the loss of morality in the capitalist society from the view of a Christian. In addition, he discussed the dissimilation of human nature and the salvation of the soul. Thus his novels painted a vivid picture of modern people's life and their lost minds. While bitterly criticizing the sin in the human world, Mauriac's novels also implied the calling from the Grace of God. Mauriac attempted to cure the maladies of society with ”God's love” and to awaken people's conscience with love, trying to achieve the goal of exterminating the evil and following the good. His novels embodied his observation and deep compassion for the temporal situations of the human race. In Mauriac's novels, Christian spirit has been transformed into the ultimate concerns for life. Through the suffering and crying of mankind in the desert of love, Mauriac tried to teach people how to understand the world, correct themselves and finally reach the pleasant oasis of love. He illuminated the great influence of Christianity on spirit, showing mankind the way out of crisis, along which we find warmth and hope. In the postmodern atmosphere where gods renounce the world and pessimistic emptiness rise, it is necessary for people to rebuild the value of life and roads to truth with constructive thinking. True Christian faith lives in the practice of witnessing and fulfilling the love and responsibility embodied in the cross. Eventually, it would break away from material chains and gain deiform brightness and freedom.
