A worm gear reducer is widely used in agricultural and industrial machines such as rice drying machine, belt conveyor, paddle wheel aerator, pipe milling machine, etc. The merits of a worm gear reducer is its high speed ratio, less volume and lightweight, but the efficiency is comparatively low. This study was to design a worm gear reducer with comparatively high efficiency. A disc prony brake was developed. This brake could measure the output of a worm gear reducer by a driving motor. The results of experimental data revealed that the larger lead angle has the more efficiency. Maximum efficiency would occur at lead angle of 42° if the coefficient of worm and worm gear was 0.1 for a gear type with 20° normal pressure angle. More number of start thread could have a larger lead angle in a worm. Inmechanical design, the magnitude of lead angle of worm is equal to the magnitude of helix angle of worm gear in a worm gear reducer.
