The Effects of Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lens Wear on the Corneal Endothelium

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens wear on the corneal endothelium. We performed specular microscopy on the corneal endothelium of 20 young RGP contact lens wearers at the time of two and three years duration respectively and 13 age-matched non-lens-wearing controls. The parameter, including cell density, mean cell area, standard deviation, coefficient of variation of cell size (CV), maximum cell, minimum cell and hexagonality were displayed. The cell density and mean cell area showed no significant difference (P>.05) between the data of two and three years duration of wearer and controls. The coefficient of variaiton of cell size (CV) and the frequency of hexagonality also showed no significant change (P>.05). Our results suggest that the shortterm RGP contact lens wearing does not result in cell density and morphologic change. The long-term effect still need further observation and evaluation.
