Quality-of-Life and Visual Function Assessment Following Cataract Extraction with Multifocal Versus Monofocal Intraocular Lens in Taiwan

摘要

Purpose: To compare the visual functions and quality of life (QOL) in eyes with multifocal versus monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in Taiwan. Methods: A total of 61 patients with bilateral IOL implantation were divided into three groups as follows: ReSTOR (44 eyes), Tecnis ZM900 (36 eyes), SA60AT (42 eyes). All ophthalmic examinations were performed 3 months after IOL implantation. Visual functions included uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity (UVA/ BCVA) at 6 m, 70 cm and 33 cm, reports of spectacle independence, and contrast sensitivity (CS) with Rabin CS test. The Chinese version of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) was measured. One-way ANOVA and Chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Results: The near UVA/BCVA of the multifocal groups were better than that of the monofocal group. Postoperative near spectacle independence of the multifocal groups (ReSTOR 90.9%; Tecnics ZM900 89.5%) was greater than that of the monofocal group (31.8%) (p<.05). The mean log CS value under glare conditions for the multifocal groups was worse than that of the monofocal group (ReSTOR 0.40±0.35; Tecnis ZM900 0.23±0.26; SA60AT 0.42±0.33, p<.05) Postoperative scores of NEI-VFQ-25 were high, but not significantly different between the 3 groups. Conclusions: The multifocal IOLs demonstrated excellent near vision with high spectacle independence. There was no compromised CS in dim and glare conditions and better vision-related QOL than monofocal IOLs.
