A 74-year-old male patient was referred to our department for 131I thyroid ablation therapy. He had undergone partial thyroidectomy for multinodular goiter of thyroid with hyperthyroidism about 25 years before and total thyroidectomy for follicular carcinoma of thyroid in October 2002. Twelve weeks after total thyroidectomy, thyroid function tests including free thyroxine (FT4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyrotropin (TSH) all showed within normal values. 131I with a dose of 60 mCi was administrated and the whole-body scintigraphy of 131I demonstrated a large area of intense radioiodine uptake in the right lobe of liver, as well as multiple areas of radioiodine uptake in anterior neck region, right lung and thoracic-lumber spine. The data were consistent with the diagnosis of functioning liver metastasis from follicular carcinoma of thyroid.
