In recent years, some foundations of CPC's oil storage tanks were damaged, leading to severe loss of properties and crisis management issues. The common causes of the failures include: destruction by natural hazards (such as earthquake), corrosion, uneven subsidence and inappropriate geology. Except the uncontrollable natural hazards, the damage due to all the other causes can be eliminated, greatly reduced or prevented by improving operation and/or techniques. The instability of storage tank foundation can be detected at an early stage by use of appropriate monitoring and preventive means be taken to lower the possible damage to the least extent.
