The compound of adamantane is in the cyclotetrahedral structure. The stability of this structure causes its lower reactivity than benzene. However, the substitution reactions of SN1 and SE2 could be carried out to produce a lot of useful adamantane derivatives for the pharmaceutical, functional polymer, lubricant, and surfactant applications. An ionic liquid is a liquid that consists only of ions, and exists in liquid state with lower viscosity at low temperatures (<100℃). The chemical and physical properties of ionic liquid will be changed with the various pair of cation and anion. This is a great advantage for the separation of the products by distillation since ionic liquids have no measurable vapor pressure. The acidic and coordination properties of the ionic liquid are essentially determined by the nature of its anions. The ionic liquid with the mole fraction of AlCl3 higher than 0.5 will show the strong Lewis acidity of Al2Cl7^(-1), which could be used for the catalytic isomerization of exo-THDCPD for adamantane. In this paper, the effect of reaction temperature, reaction time, composition of ionic liquid and IL/feed ratio on the conversion and selectivity of isomerization have been evaluated.
