Asymptomatic Cardiac Calcified Amorphus Tumor: A Case Report

This article describes an unusual case of a cardiac mass, a cardiac calcified amorphous tumor (CAT), in a 71-year-old woman who presented without clinical symptoms. Echocardiography revealed a calcified left atrial mass (about 1.6 x 2.9cm). The patient received cardiac exploration and removal of the mass, and had an uneventful postoperative course. CAT is a very rare benign cardiac mass that is usually mistaken for malignancy or myxoma and may cause related symptoms due to obstruction or embolization of calcified fragments. Most patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed accidentally, which may explain why only a few such cases have been reported in the current literature. The clinical outcome of CAT is excellent following complete surgical removal. Clinical differentiation from other cardiac masses through image study is impossible in most cases. Histopathological examination after surgical excision is the only modality for confirmation.
