新加坡《振南日報》載福慧禪師詩文補述雙林寺史料

A Supplementary Note On History of Shuang Lin Monastery Seen In Reverend Fuhui's Literary Works Compiled Within Singapore's Cheng Nam Jit Poh

摘要

新加坡雙林禪寺在2018年編印《新加坡蓮山雙林禪寺一百二十周年文集》，對建廟歷史進行了至今最翔實而全面的探討；尤其較全面搜索《叻報》與二戰以前的《南洋商報》，補充了不少歷史材料。可惜的是，卻對於1913～1920年的《振南日報》全然缺如。本文通過窮盡式的檢索，從主要爲1913～1917年的《振南日報》中挖掘出一些重要的歷史材料，對雙林寺的建廟歷史及其相關人物做了補充論述，同時糾正目前一些錯誤的提法，包括從1909～1911年之間曾擔任雙林寺住持的福慧禪師的詩文作品中，證明福慧禪師並非1911年圓寂，而且從1901～1915年之間曾多番往來於雙林寺。其中最爲關鍵的是福慧禪師1915年撰寫的〈星洲雙林禪寺開山性慧禪師塔銘〉，不僅是第一次發現關於性慧禪師的生平詳細記錄，更重要是提供我們關於雙林寺創建歷史的不同敘述視角。由此延伸，聯係於20世紀之交福建僧團及其寺院系統在新馬的積極活動與其關係網，提出1898年新加坡雙林寺的創建絕不應僅僅視爲一個孤立且偶然的供養僧人的建寺事例。

The Singapore Shuang Lin Monastery published the 120^(th) anniversary of the Shuang Lin Monastery special edition in 2018, in which the history of the monastery's establishment is given by far the most comprehensive narration, especially with the insertion of historical records from Lat Pau and Nanyang Siang Pau before the second world war. However, the whole of Cheng Nam Jit Poh from 1913~1920 has been totally omitted. This paper, by means of a thorough search through the Cheng Nam Jit Poh mainly from 1913~1917, uncovered a considerable amount of historical records that could supplement the current historical narrative of Shuang Lin Monastery's establishment and the persons involved, and at the same time rectify some incorrect statements about the subject. The most important among them being the literary works of Reverend Fuhui, who was the abbot of Shuang Lin Monastery in 1909~1911, proved that Reverend Fuhui did not pass away in 1911. And moreover, he had made several travels to and from the Shuang Lin Monastery between 1901~1915. Most significantly is the Stupa inscription for the founder of Shuang Lin Monastery Reverend Xinghui, which is written by Reverend Fuhui in 1915. This was not only the first discovery of a comprehensive life record of Reverend Xinghui, but more importantly provided us with a different perspective and narrative to the history of the Shuang Lin Monastery's establishment. Thereafter, it led us to further elaborate on the connections between Shuang Lin Monastery's establishment and the activities of the Fujian Buddhist missionaries and their monasteries in Singapore and Malaysia by the turn of 20^(th) century. Hence this paper proposed that the Shuang Lin Monastery's establishment in 1898 should not be perceived as just an isolated and accidental incident of monastery establishment by means of offerings to a Buddhist missionary.
