Hexachlorophene is a commercially available germicidal agent especially used in the newborn nursery for prevention of staphylococcal infection. However hexachlorophene is also neurotoxic to white matter of cerebrum, brainstem, and peripheral nerves as well as retinal photoreceptor cells and potic nerves. We report a young boy developed urinary retension, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blurred vision and ptosis after accidental swallowing of 60mg hexachlorophene. Optic atrophy was noted although visual acuity recovered after a 10 year follow-up. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials still showed prolonged absolute latencies of waves III and V indicating affecting the vision and brainstem. The visual system may the most vulnerable to be damage.
