Biotechnology has surged into the twenty-first century. What are the opinions of the pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers toward developments in this field? We used a questionnaire to survey the understanding, awareness and attitudes toward biotechnology of pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers. Nine hundred and ten questionnaires were collected and analyzed. The results demonstrated that the pre-service teachers who had majored in science displayed significantly greater understanding and awareness of biotechnology compared to other subjects. On the other hand, in-service teachers held more negative opinions toward biotechnology. However, most of the subjects agreed that biotechnological developments in medicine and pharmaceutics were positive. The survey data may offer insights into how to improve education about biotechnology in Taiwan.
