This study aims at surveying the concepts and activities on leisure time of the commercial and industrial employees in the Republic of China. The subjects are 1,624(1151 men and 473 women)on-the-job professionals within the areas of Taipei City and Taipei County. The analysis concludes as follows: 1. The working time of the people within the commercial and industrial circles is rather long, with an average over 50 hours per week. The time gets longer in proportion to less education, more physical and manual labors, more county circumstances and revolving odd-jobs. 2. With regard to the concepts on the activities in spare time, the unity is found more among the male than among the female. 3. A very strong sense of dissatisfaction is found toward the living and working environments, such as recreational programs, equipments, and funds provided by the employers, and there creational facilities around the residence. 4. Recreational activities are mostly conducted within or around the residing houses. Concerning the preference of activities, there is a high relation.(i.e. P 0.001). 5. Over 80 per cent of the subjects are self-conscious of mind causative; and more than half of them have not yet taken any postive actions in improving their health. 6. About 50 per cent of the subjects suggest that school should increase the students' extracurricular activities and make its recreational facilities accessible to the public. 7. Over 50 per cent of the subjects suggest that the government should construct more parks, playgrounds, and set up special agencies to promote proper pastime activities which they believe will in return help enhance working proficiency. And most of them demand that, for the purpose of recreation, adequate consideration should be made on the utilization of the areas near the sea or mountain.
