This study explored the correlation between marine tourism and macroeconomic variables based on the Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications data from 2002 to 2019. It compared the number of inbound tourists and the number of domestic trips by citizens within Taiwan to discuss the differences. Our findings serve as a reference for policy recommendations on tourism development. This study's results indicate a long-term equilibrium relationship between the number of marine leisure tourists and the GDP, NDI, CPI, and exchange rates during the study period. There was a bilateral feedback relationship between the number of marine leisure tourists and the GDP, NDI, and CPI, but no causal relationship between the number of marine leisure tourists with exchange rates. The analysis showed that the impact response of the number of marine leisure tourists to the GDP and NDI was positive. Finally, this study verified that there was a significant difference when the type of tourists varied. The relationship between the number of marine leisure tourists and the macroeconomic variables was the most significant. In contrast, the relationships between the number of inbound tourists and exchange rate were insignificant. This study's results can serve as a reference for formulating marine tourism policies and complement the need for more literature on marine tourism.
