戰前馬來亞史英文文獻概述（1877－1941）

摘要

馬來亞歷史的研究，或者說以現代意義的科學方法進行研究的馬來亞歷史，最早發其端的是英國學人和英殖民地時期的學術行政人員，英國皇家亞洲學會海峽分會和馬來亞分會以及其刊行的學報，成了他們發表成果的平臺。戰前英文源流的馬來亞史研究，可分為六類，即馬來亞通史的著述、州別史的研究、政治社會史的研究、文化習俗的研究、華人史研究和歷史教科書的編寫。馬來亞史研究的興盛發展可以1920年代為分水嶺，在此之前，雖然已經有一些馬來亞史研究的著述，但整體上差強人意。1920年代以後，不止在量上突飛猛增，在質上也有劃時代的代表性著述產生。

Modern research on the History of Malaya, or more accurately the use of modern scientific research methods, began with the work of British colonial officers, scholars and other writers. Their works were largely published in the Royal Asiatic Society of the Straits and Malayan Branches and in other publications. Pre-war writings in English on Malayan History may be divided into six categories, namely, Malayan history in general, the history of individual states, socio-political history, cultures and practices, the history of local Chinese communities, and the writing of history textbooks. The 1920s marked the watershed in historical research. Works published prior to the 1920s were general and descriptive. It was in the 1930s that research and publications showed a marked improvement in quantity and quality. Several publications during this decade had become classic works.
