Healthy medical students are likely to become healthy doctors. Stress amongst medical students is often overlooked. Yes, we do know that students are stressed as medicine is a demanding course;yes, we do know that exams are stressful, but the question here is what are the permanent scars it leaves on students as they graduate? Are they ready and capable of making critical decisions? What happens to these students for the rest of their lives? Intelligent students are not always the most composed. Students suffer stress in many areas such as academic, financial, and their everyday life. It is not unusual to hear of medical students having psychiatric problems, being on drugs or suffering in silence. Stress has a tremendous impact on the quality of life and well-being of medical students. Below, the author attempts to explain the definition of stress, models of stress, research that has been done on stress and in particular medical students including gender differences. Medical education can be a health hazard for many students, and far-reaching reforms are needed to improve it.
