In Japan, the total amount of industrial wastes generation is 405million metric ton/year in 1997. The major categories representing more than 80% of waste generated include; sludge (47.7%), animal waste (17.8%) and construction and demolition wastes (15.2%). In light of the rapidly decreasing landfill capacity in Japan, the incineration treatment is taken main treatment method for soild wastes and consequently, an unintended byproduct of dioxins occurred from some waste incinerator. It becomes a serious problem. The questionnaire was sent to 32 different types of food industries for to obtain information on the wastes generation and their treatment, recycling and disposal of wastes. In brief, a mean quantity was estimated at 5,872 metric ton/ year under the 11 categories solid wastes which were surveyed, including: sludge, vegetable and animal residues, plastics, scrap metals, glasses, cooking oils, incinerated residues, others, combustible wastes (waste paper, wood chips, etc.) non-combustibles, discharged from each food industry. Within the total volume sludge comprised 54.6%, vegetable residues 26.8%, glasses 3.0%, animal residues 3.0% and other wastes 7.3%. About 89% of solid wastes were treated on-site at each industry. The percentage of olid waste recycled at each food industry was estimated at about 6.6%; while in additional 31.5% of total volume was recycled by industrial waste management contractor. Depending on the source of the sludge, the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content average about 7.0, 4.0 and 0.8% respectively. And so it is often recycled as compost, fertilizer and animal feed.
