On the Inheritance and Development of "ZaShi" in the Tang Dynasty

This study investigates "Zashi", or the extemporaneously composed untitled poetry, in the Tang Dynasty, examines specifically its form and content, draws a comparison with the "Zashi" in Wen Xuan, or the Selections of Refined Literature, and sheds light on its literary significance. The first section of this study consists of an introduction, while the second section examines and clarifies the terminology and definition of "Zashi". The third and fourth sections discuss two types of "Zashi" of Tang Dynasty classified in reference to its form and content, namely, "ti ming Zashi" (poems entitled "Zashi") and "juan ming Zashi" (poetry volume entitled "ZaShi"). The former, "ti ming Zashi", displays a diverse variety in form and content, available in both "Guti" poetry (a form of pre-Tang poetry) and "Jinti" poetry (modern-style poetry), it has an overwhelming bulk of lyric poetry alongside narrative and argumentative poetry. Drawing on the "Zashi" in the Six Dynasties, this type of "Zashi" had gradually developed its unique and creative expressions. On the other hand, "juan ming Zashi" denotes "Za shi"-titled Tang poetry anthologies that contain numerous specifically titled poems that have practically no commonalities in their forms and content. In the fifth section, this study compares Tang "Zashi" with the "Zashi" in Wen Xuan to illustrate their differences from an inheritance perspective. The sixth section of this study investigates the significance of "Zashi" in the Tang Dynasty and arrives at the following findings: In terms of poetics, "Zashi" pertains to a collection of lyric-oriented poems or the ones that express one's emotions; in terms of bibliography, "Zashi" may be perceived as an unrefined method of compilation and editing. Finally, the seventh section provides the conclusion of this study, summarizing the overall development of "Zashi" in the Tang Dynasty and constructing its specific outline.
