Contraction expressions such as "けれども→けど" are generally considered difficult for Japanese learners in listening comprehension and application. This study conducted a questionnaire survey of intermediate and advanced Japanese learners in Taiwan to explore 1) the use consciousness of leaners regarding 19 contraction expressions (including those used in formal and informal occasions); and 2) differences in the use consciousness between learners who are willing and those who are unwilling to apply contraction expressions. A basic statistical process was performed on the obtained data for all variables (items) by using Excel software. Moreover, to explore the differences between learners who are willing and those who are unwilling to apply contraction expressions, t tests on all items were conducted.
