Learning Styles of Physical Therapy Students in Technological University

Background and Purpose: It is known that learning approaches influence student's academic outcome, clinical performance and instructional preferences. Kolb has developed a four-stage cycle of learning style model. Honey and Mumford further modified and described the four learning styles as activitists, reflectors, theorists and pragmatists. The purpose of the study was to determine the learning styles of physical therapy students in technological university, and to compare students from different gender, academic years, and pre-entrance educational background. Method: 267 physical therapy students were recruited from one of technological university. All subjects completed the Chinese version of Learning Style Questionnaire (C-LSQ). Results: 201 questionnaires were analyzed (Men 30, Women 171). The majority of students were very strong and strong activities (53.7%), and reflectors (64.2%). There were less than 40% students had the preferred learning style of theorist or pragmatist. No significant difference among gender, grade and pre-entrance educational background were found in the four learning styles. Conclusion: The students of physical therapy program in technological university were in preference of Activities and Reflector styles. They prefer to learn through ”feeling concrete experience” and ”reviewing the experience”. It is important to know students' preferred learning styles for curriculum design and effective teaching.
