An Analysis of the Physical Activity Participation and the Body Mass Indexes of Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder in Both Genders

This study examined the physical activity level in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) in different genders. The relationship between the physical activity level and the body mass indexes (BMI) was also explored. The subjects consisted of 333 children (170 boys & 163 girls) aged 9-12 years old who were individually screened on the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (Movement ABC) and assessed with the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C). Descriptive values were presented as means and standard deviations. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare all measurements among three groups in both genders. The results showed that first, girls with DCD demonstrated significantly lower PAQ-C scores than girls without DCD, but boys did not show significant differences in inter-group comparison. Second, in terms of extracurricular activities, only the girl groups (DCD vs non-DCD) differed significantly on baseball & soccer participation. Girls with DCD also showed a significantly higher level of participation in sedentary activities. Third, neither the boy groups nor the girl groups differed in BMI, and the means of BMI of all groups were under the overweight. These results showed that, among these children aged 9-12 years living in Southern and Central Taiwan, girls' motor-coordination ability seemed to influence the participation of physical activity compared with boys, while the worse the children's motor-coordination ability was, the lower the children's physical activity participation was. This might be caused by different attitudes toward the participation of physical/sedentary activities in both genders. Besides, in terms of BMI and the prevalence of overweight, we did not find a definite influence from the motor-coordination ability in this study. We suggested that further research be made in this aspect to examine the attribution between children's motor-coordination ability and the physical activity level from the perspectives of both genders.
