College is a critical period in individuals' career development. Most college student-athletes are forced to face both sports retirement and school-to-work transitions at the end of university life. Thus, student-athletes career planning and decision-making processes become the main concern for their career transitions. This study explores the mediating contexts of student-athletes career adaptation and the moderating effect of segmentation preference based on the career construction model of adaptation. The participants of the study were college student-athletes in Taiwan. A questionnaire survey was used to collect quantitative data. A total of 350 valid questionnaires were collected. The results indicate that career adaptability has a mediating effect on the relationship between focus on opportunities and career planning; when individuals have a higher degree of focus on opportunities, they can enhance their career planning through the mediating effect of career adaptability. In addition, segmentation preference can moderate the relationship between focus on opportunities, career adaptability, and career planning. When individuals' segmentation preference is low, the relationship between the mediating context of career adaptability will be enhanced. The findings not only validate that the career construction model of adaptation could be applied to the career development of student-athletes but also confirm the moderated mediation model of focus on opportunities and career planning.
