English Academic Writing Education in Graduate Programs of Medical Schools in Taiwan

Despite increasing importance of English writing for academic purposes (EWAP), few studies have explored its role in the sector of medicine. The research aims to investigate EWAP in the graduate programs of medical schools in Taiwan. Results of the questionnaire survey of 43 chairpersons first indicated that EWAP had a significant role for professional development, and all doctoral programs under investigation involved EWAP in the requirements of graduation. About 60% of the graduate programs provided EWAP courses, most of which were elective. Seventy-seven percent of the course defined the role of EWAP by including the words writing and/or thesis/research article in the title. Meanwhile, in addition to the department, Language Center, English Department/Foreign Language Department, and General Education Center were major sources of assistance of EWAP (56% in total). Finally, the chairpersons believed the best candidates for EWAP education were writing teachers and disciplinary teachers, but not general English teachers. Pedagogical implications and future research are also suggested in the study.
