Arishima, Takeo is one of the famous novelists during the Taisho Era who adopted writing styles from western languages for Japanese, at both the level of words and phrases, and syntactic structure during Japan's modernization. His masterpiece, ”Aru Onna”, clearly reflects the influences of western language usages and literary techniques on his writing, for example, the use of non-living subjects and demonstrative pronouns. This paper is a quantitative analysis of one of his early works, ”An Incident”, and focuses on the descriptions of body language found in this work. The analysis reveals that his writing style had already been substantially influenced by western language usage before he became a professional writer.
