Interference between Simultaneous Postural Control and the Visuospatial Memory Task

When treating clients with balance deficits, occupational therapists often ignore the cognitive component of postural control. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interference that occurs between simultaneous performance of postural control and the visuospatial memory task. A counterbalanced repeated measures design combined with the modified dual-task paradigm was used to test 32 healthy, young participants. They performed the Sensory Organization Test, Rhythmic Weight Shift Test, and the visuospatial memory task under single-task and dual-task conditions. The results showed that performance of postural control and the visuospatial memory task was significantly poorer under the dual-task conditions than under the single-task conditions, based on equilibrium scores, strategy scores, visual preference ratio, on-axis velocity, and mental scores. The findings suggest that therapists might integrate the cognitive component of postural control into their treatment plan for balance training. This study also provides evidence for the task-oriented model of postural control.
