醫學英語寫作專案計畫訓練成效之觀察性研究:以臺灣中部某醫學中心為例

摘要

Increased use of English for Specific Purposes, including English for Medical Purposes (EMP) to assist in the internationalization of medical education and within healthcare institutes (HCIs), has become more and more essential. To improve the quality of English writing skills and to enhance writing ability at HCIs, our institute in central Taiwan invited an English as a Second Language (ESL) writing expert and conducted a Medical English Writing Program (MEWP). The aim of this observational study is to describe their knowledge, attitude and behavior for medical English writing after participants attending MEWP. The MEWP course included weekend workshop sessions and individual coaching sessions by the invited writing professor (WP). The research tools in this study included a standard questionnaire for professional purposes workshop evaluation, a self-report satisfaction survey, and a system to track manuscripts on the way to publication. Forty-five participants attended this MEWP in total, and one hundred and twenty one units of person-time participated during the period March 17 to March 22, 2015. Almost half of the participants were in their twenties as well as attending physicians. The results for knowledge and attitude modules are around 56% to 61.5%. More than 88% participants were satisfied with the teaching methods of the WP. The overall satisfaction was 93.7%. Nine of sixteen participants who had individual manuscript review sessions successfully submitted their manuscripts soon after the workshops. In this study, we observed the participants were satisfied with the 2015 CCH MEWP. We emphasized the importance of knowledge because that is a major positive influence affecting participants. The importance of the MEWP was demonstrated in this study with regard to improving English writing ability and the fact that HCIs need this kind of workshop. The positive results of this study could provide HCIs with a reference regarding MEWP. Our study is valuable with respect to educational information regarding the MEWP.
