A major concern in higher education is whether the admission criteria used by universities are suitable for identifying competent candidates. This issue is especially pressing for Taiwanese higher education related to art. For about half a century, Taiwanese high school students who have wanted to enter any art-related programs in higher education have been required to take two national admission tests: the Joint College Entrance Examination (JCEE), measuring students’ academic achievement, and the JCEE Art-Skill Test, measuring art-making abilities. Combined scores on these examinations serve as the major determinant for matriculation. It is nonetheless unknown if scores on these examinations are valid and accurate indices of subsequent undergraduate performance. Using inferential statistical analysis, this study investigated the relationships between the undergraduate GPAs and JCEE scores, with regard to both gender and high school background.
