Objective: To explore Macau nurses' perceptions of elderly people and of elderly people's health. Method: Registered nurses, who were undertaking a gerontological nursing course during the period of 2004 and 2006, were asked to complete a self administered questionnaire. Open-ended questions were used and content analysis employed to analyze the responses. Results: The respondents paid more attention to elderly people's physical alteration than to other changes. While nurses focused more on a holistic concept of health, the elderly considered pain-free and capable of self-care to be healthy. Conclusion: A better understanding of older people by Macau nurses is needed.
