Wang Guowei is the founder of the field of historical study in Chinese opera with modern academic views. By absorbing the theory of philosophy, anthropology and psychology, Wang greatly expanded the topics in this domain and enlightened the later scholars carry on the research within the boundary of modern scholarship. Compared to the previous scholarship, Wang's multidisciplinary exploration circled the definition of Chinese opera he suggested as ”showing the story by dancing and singing”. In this conception, performance and its subject human are highly concerned, which distinguished Wang's achievement from the early studies. This paper will analyze the characteristics of Wang's research in Chinese opera history with the emphasis on the systematic order of his entire study. Another discussion on the inner anthropological view manifested in Wang's works will reveal the significance of his discovery in Chinese intellectual history.
