We conducted three trials to evaluate the competitive exclusion efficiency of two commercial probiotic products. The probiotic products were used to build superiority flora in the intestines of day-old broilers. The broilers were then challenged with the Salmonella (S. enteritidis or S. typhimurium), and the recovery of the challenged strain was conducted over a 42-day rearing period. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the recovery rate from the cloacal swab samples between the probiotic and the control group in the first three weeks of age (P<0.05), also the recovery pattern of the challenge strain was different between the broilers received different probiotic product. While the recovery pattern of the chickens challenged with S. enteritidis or S. typhimurium was very similar, and it was also found that the Salmonella infection rate was higher in the ceca than in the crops of the challenged chicken. Amending the process of the experiment, realizing the mechanism of competitive exclusion and utilizing the prevalent salmonella serovar in Taiwan will be helpful to build the most suitable model of competitive exclusion in meat-type chickens in Taiwan.
