Hemochromatosis is a common disorder of iron metabolism resulting in iron overload and affecting human and animals, particularly avian species. Over the past 3 decades, increasing incidence of hemochromatosis has been documented in captive birds. In this study, hemochromatosis identified by Berlin blue stain has been diagnosed in 52 out of 186 (28%) avian necropsies. The disease affects 11 avian orders. The organs most commonly affected are the liver, and less in heart, kidney, and spleen.
