Planning Process In conjunction with the opening of the museum and to offer even better contents for visitors, the National Science and Technology Museum has chosen the theme of ”Invention” for a temporary exhibition. The concept is simple to begin with, and materials are easy to find-just look at the staggering number of patents that have been issued to inventors in Taiwan and around the world. These are all strong arguments for invention as a topic for a temporary exhibition. Planning for this exhibition began in July with the layout, followed by serious design work in August. By mid-October the hardest part of preparation had been completed and polishing of the final package began. On November 9 the doors of the museum opened to reveal the temporary exhibit on Invention to the public for the first time. Contents of the Exhibition The main focus in this display is on defining what invention is and all of its many different manifestations. The display uses concrete objects to depict abstract concepts, and wherever possible we have included games or other interactive methods to reinforce the ideas behind the inventions. There are seven main areas in Invention: 1. Main theme-the Spirit of Invention 2. History-Invention creates culture 3. Creativity-the Spark of Invention 4. Results-the Fruit of Invention and Hard Work 5. Games-the Molder of Invention 6. Design-the Evolving of Invention 7. Activity-the Realization of Invention Exhibition Space The exhibition has been laid out in a star-shaped arrangement with the movements and actions of the museum visitor as the main hub. After considering the space available for display and the materials to be shown five different types of displays were developed: 1. Closed exhibits 2. Closed projection areas 3. Open projection areas 4. Island displays 5. Combined island/projection displays In addition, color coding is used to differentiate the different display areas. Exhibition Activities The displays in this exhibition can also be classified as either static or active displays. Static displays cover China's greatest inventions, a look at Taiwan's top ten award winning inventions from recent years and other topics. These displays all present abstract information on inventions for visitors to enjoy and study through observations. The active displays are generally divided into a play section and an activity section. These offer interactivity between the visitor and the display so that people learn about the invention by re-experiencing it or by demonstrating it themselves. Afterword This exhibition was put together in a relatively short period of time; and while it showcases the talents and resources of the museum staff, this is not the best way in which to approach a project of this sort. Museum people everywhere take it for granted that putting together a display calls for international participation. From the time this project was started up until two weeks before it opened, all design, drawing, writing and other production was done by our museum designer. Fortunately we were able to marshal the forces of our entire section during the final stages of preparation to bring it to completion. Thus this project has been flawed in some ways, but we have also learned a great deal from our mistakes. We have discovered how effective our people can be in putting together special or temporary exhibits like this one, and we intend to make good use of this experience in the future.
