This study will illuminate why Carl Schmitt's concept of the political uses the friend-enemy distinction as its criterion. The concept of the political was developed in the context of international relations and war, but later evolved to address domestic affairs in response to the internal political conflicts in the Weimar Republic. This essay will also discuss the critique from Dolf Sternberger, one of the most important commentators on Schmitt after the war. Sternberger criticized Schmitt's concept of the political and proposed an opposing conception that is based on peace rather than war. Lastly, this essay will conclude with a critical evaluation of Sternberger's comment.
