|There have been many studies relating to the passive form -rareru and the aspect form -teiru, but -rare teiru which combines these two forms has been less fully investigated. This study examines the acquisition of the five functions of -rare teiru. The subjects for this study were sixty intermediate and sixty advanced level Taiwanese learners of Japanese studying in Taiwan. The questionnaires have been analyzed by SPSS StatisticsVer.18.0. The results show: (1) Advanced level learners of Japanese can use -rare teiru more correctly than intermediate level learners of Japanese. (2) There are differences in levels of difficulty in acquiring the five functions of -rare teiru for both intermediate and advanced level learners. In order from least to greatest difficulty, they are: properties, action in progress, repetition, resultative state, action's effect. (3) More errors of -rare teiru tended to occur in intermediate level than advanced level. The errors occurred in intermediate level are mainly distributed to -rareru, -rareta, -teiru, while the errors occurred in advanced level are mostly concentrated on -rareta which shows a remarkably high using rate especially in difficult functions. Thus, it can be said that -rareta which shows passive and past tense simultaneously has a great influence on the acquisition of -rare teiru to the end.
