Effects of Different Lexical Processing Strategies on Vocabulary Learning during Reading

英文閱讀中不同生字處理策略與字彙學習之成效

摘要


英文學習中字彙與閱讀成效之關係一直為英語教學專家學者所重視。英語學習者不但需學習如何更有效地去閱讀,藉由閱讀來擴展知識的同時,也增加了英文閱讀能力,特別是英文字彙的學習。閱讀中當遇到不認識之生字、生詞時,讀者會運用不同之生字處理策略來瞭解該文意。本研究即探討十位英語中級程度之學習者,於閱讀英文文章遇到生字、生詞時,其不同之生字處理策略。經閱讀後之測驗及訪談中得知其生字處理策略與字彙學習之成效。結果發現,不同於許多文獻所指出,參與此研究之英語學習者,最常用之閱讀時生字、生詞處理策略為立即查詢字典。其他生字處理策略如猜測字意、或忽略該生字等,相對的卻不多見。此研究結果顯示出這些學習者對生字之中譯解釋及字典之依賴。本研究亦針對其結果,對英文閱讀教學及字彙學習策略提出建言。

The close relationship between reading and vocabulary has long been recognized in second/foreign language learning and teaching. English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners not only learn how to read effectively, they also read to expand their world knowledge and at the same time increase their language proficiency, particularly vocabulary. When encountering unknown vocabulary during reading, learners would try to approach the unfamiliar lexis with different strategies, namely lexical processing strategies. This study attempts to investigate the lexical processing strategies that ten EFL intermediate learners employ when reading an authentic text for comprehension. Contrary to what has been reported in the literature, the results of this study showed that dictionary consultation was the most favored strategy among these participants. The implications of the results for EFL word processing strategies on text comprehension and vocabulary learning are discussed.
