The Association between Excessive Use of Internet and Depression in Junior High School Students

Objectives: Depressive disorder among adolescent students in junior high school is of a major concern for their general well-being and safety and its association with excessive usage of internet is followed closely by the whole world. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of depressive disorder among junior high school students and its possible risk factors. Methods: We adopted a cross-sectional design in this study. All 252 students filled in the questionnaires. The prevalence rate was calculated and then adjusted with the validity of the screening questionnaires, and the contributing factors were extracted by regression. Results: The prevalence rate for possible depressive disorders was 11.9% and the prevalence rate for possible major depressive disorder was 7.9%. After adjusted with validity of the questionnaire, the prevalence rates for possible depressive disorders and possible major depressive disorder were 6.15% and 1.18%, respectively. Excessive internet users (OR=8.12; 95%CI=3.13- 21.05), girl students (OR=5.55; 95%CI=1.90-21.05), and insomnia (OR=4.98; 95%CI=1.29-19.11), were significant associated with possible depression. Risk factors for possible depressive disorder among adolescents in junior high school between different genders were different. Conclusions: We found that the prevalence rate of depressive disorders and major depressive disorder among adolescent students were relatively high, and was significantly associated with noticeable and preventable excessive internet use. Great efforts of professionals are required to make early clinical diagnosis. The findings of this study may be provided to parents and teachers for early awareness and intervention.
