Recognized by a number of trophies, Shaun Tan was awarded the Silver Medal in the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition in Bologna Children's Book Fair by The Red Tree. His unique style in illustration and subtle arrangement in pictorial symbols are worth studying. This research reviews The Red Tree's character design, dynamic face expression, color planning, background setup, and pictorial symbols arrangement, among other visual elements in picture books. Furthermore, a semiological analysis was made on the underlying meanings of The Red Tree. This research leads to a better understanding on how pictorial symbols construct a successful picture book. So I compress five points as follows. First of all, the author makes good use of the differential relationship between a picture and a sign. Secondly, his pictures draw on the techniques of metonymy and metaphors. Thirdly, his illusionary form and background visualize an abstract concept. Fourthly, symbolic signs have a series connection between the beginning and the ending of this picture book. And lastly, the author also takes advantage of the technique of ”personification” to create multiple effects.
