Re-developing a Medical English Course for Frontline Hospital Staff in Taiwan

An academic industrial cooperation project (AICP) delivering ESP courses for hospital workers had previously been implemented in the Nursing, Health Management and Physical Therapy departments of a technology university in central Taiwan for two years. However, the medical English training course and its materials continue to undergo evaluation in order to develop them further, and ensure that they are effective both pedagogically and practically to meet the needs of the medical staff when talking to patients. This study therefore relates to the third year of this AICP, reporting on the teaching and learning results from the 48 hour Medical English Training Course (METC) in the private technological university affiliated to a private general hospital. This course was taught collaboratively by two local and one foreign teacher from the Applied English Dept. of the university. Most importantly, a specially constructed supplementary online program was pioneered to facilitate seamlessly learning. Mixed methods involving eight instruments were adopted to investigate the teaching and learning effectiveness. Provisional results show that participants rated the course very highly and participants achieved significant gains in oral and grammar abilities overall. The eLearning component however proved to need some further technical development, and a number of other specific recommendations are made.
