Good competency of nurses is the key to increases in the quality of nursing care. Nurses of both genders can provide the best of what their particular gender is capable. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to understand the essential nursing competency of female nurses, the male nurses, and supervisors of nurses. A cross-sectional design was adopted for this study. The researchers used a structural questionnaire as a tool to explore the views of nurses of both genders and their supervisors on nursing competency. The subjects, including male and female nurses of the same position, and their supervisors, were recruited from hospitals of all strata in Taiwan. The data were statistically analyzed and the results were as follows. 1. The nursing supervisors and nurses of both gender graded the female nurses with significantly better competency than the male nurses. 2. The supervisors, who had supervised male nurses in more numbers and for longer periods of time, gave male nurses better management evaluations. The above results suggest that the nursing competency of female nurses is slightly superior to that of male nurses. The nursing competency of male nurses improves with increases in the numbers of male nurses and in length of period of observation. Male nurses need more time to adapt to the nursing job market.
