The U. S.-Japan Alliance and the Strategic Implications on Taiwan's Security

並列摘要

This paper is concerned with how the evolution of U.S.-Japan security relations may affect Taiwan's security. The revision of the U.S.-Japan Defense Cooperation Guidelines between 1997 and 1999 outlined for the first time Japan's military assistance to the United States in an East Asian regional contingency under the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty. China's military development and assertive military actions in the 1990s, especially since the 1996 Missile Crisis and afterwards, demonstrated a very real threat to Japan's vital sea-lanes and bilateral relations with Taiwan and China. The emphasis of the revised guidelines on the military cooperation in areas surrounding Japan reflects the regionalization of U.S-Japan alliance.
