The Biomechanical Comparisons of CurveWalker, Damping Treadmill and Traditional Treadmill

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences for the lumbar and knee concussion, and burning calories when running on Curve Walker, Damping Treadmill and Traditional Treadmill. We recruited 10 college division II tennis players as subjects. Firstly, the reflective markers were affixed to subjects’ joints and segments. Then, accelerometers were fixed on subjects’ the tibia bone plate and sacral. Finally, subjects wore a sterile set of oxygen uptake and oxygen mask flow sensor. The subjects were randomly arranged three treadmill testing sequence and three running speeds. The treadmill speeds were slow run (4 km / hr), fast run (6 km / hr), and sprint (8 km / hr). They ran five minutes on treadmill in each condition with at least 10 minutes rest between trials. Statistical processing was using repeated measures two-way ANOVA in SPSS 12.0 software. The results showed that the lumbar and knee acceleration and knee angle that running on the Curve Walker was less than the Damping Treadmill and Traditional Treadmill. The conclusion of this study was that running on the Curve Walker can not only reduce the risk of injury to the knee joint and lumbar spine, and can achieve high energy consumption in a short period of time.
