The university physical education (PE) is at the moment of being marginalized, this makes people deliberate the necessity of changing university PE curriculum. In some universities, PE curriculum is classified into the liberal arts education. This causes the author to study whether PE curriculum can fulfill the liberal arts education objective or not. The education objectives of PE in some Taiwan's universities are engaged with the objectives of their liberal arts education, however, their PE curriculum design, curriculum contents and teaching methods cannot carry out the established education objectives of PE. In this paper, the author starts to describe the orientation and function of PE in the universities in Taiwan, and then to discuss the differences and similarities between PE education objectives and the libera1 arts education objectives. The author also points out the necessity to change PE curriculum into the liberal PE curriculum. Finally, the eight curriculum design ideas of the libera1 PE curriculum are offered.
