The Bonding Strengths of Dental Ti-Zr Alloys to Low-Fusion Porcelain and the Respective Thermal Expansion Coefficients

This study was designed to evaluate the bonding characteristics of titanium porcelain Duceratin when bonded to Ti-Zr alloys and commercially pure titanium (c.p. Ti). The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of all Ti-Zr alloys and c.p. Ti were also evaluated. The experimental results indicated that the Ti-10Zr alloy had the highest bonding strength, being higher than that of c.p. Ti. When the Zr content was increased to 20 wt% or greater, the respective strengths were below the minimum value in the ISO 9693 standard (25 MPa). Moreover, the CTE values of the Ti-Zr alloys were lower than that of c.p. Ti (10.1 ×10^(-6)/℃), ranging from 9.4 to 9.9×10^(-6)/℃. The CTE values had a tendency to decrease as the zirconium content increased. However, the CTEs for Ti-30Zr and Ti-40Zr were lower than that of Duceratin; hence, the surfaces of the Ti-30Zr and Ti-40Zr alloy specimens on which the porcelain was fired were observed to curve slightly toward the porcelain side while cooling. Thus, it was concluded that the high bonding strength of the Ti-10Zr alloy was the result of the small difference in the CTE between this alloy and the Duceratin porcelain, an outcome which appears to verify the fact that weak bonding strength is the result of a mismatch between CTEs.
