A Narrative Research of Professional Development for One Social Worker in Guiding Students with Special Needs

The study aimed to understand the stories of social work service on students with special needs through the experiences of one social worker, Nancy, working in department of social welfare in a county. It also explored Nancy's professional development and treatments along with her experiences working with individuals with disabilities. This study conducted the narrative research by interviewing Nancy to collect her professional stories and compile them into some pieces of transcripts. After repeated reading to summarize and analysing these transcripts, the researchers eventually completed the research on Nancy's professional development. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Nancy served those exceptional students confronting domestic violence, gender equality incidents, or family dysfunctions such as unable to take care of themselves due to physical or mental disabilities. 2. Nancy encountered those exceptional students needing referral, evaluations and assessment, educational placements, confidentiality, guidance and/or counselling, resource linking, transitions, and emotional attachments of social work services at different school levels. 3. In addition to educational needs, Nancy also needed to provide these exceptional students referral, evaluations and assessments, living placement, interventions, guidance and/or counselling, case management, and follow-ups. The evaluations and assessment tools might be quite different from those used in educational agencies. 4. Nancy might need treatments such as respecting the legal rights of the students with disabilities, rising to the challenges of professional competency, coping with role conflicts, and confronting the work loading. Based on Nancy's interviews, the researchers proposed some suggestions at the end of this study to serve as a valuable reference for the interested readers to conduct future researches.
